PASSION was my master’s thesis. The cross-cultural music road film follows a musician who goes on a dream quest at thirty-two years old after discovering an out-of-print record of a little-known Polish jazz violinist. Zach Brock pursues liner note clues detailing the life of Zbigniew Seifert, whose life was cut short at the age of thirty-two. Picking up the pieces leads Zach from New York where Seifert left behind his posthumous record, PASSION, to Poland where he discovers the roots and soul of an original voice.
The project received an award from the New York State Council to perform live with Zach Brock, editing clips from the movie with improvised jazz music.
A MUSICAL TALE (Thuenpa Puen Zhi):
FOUR HARMONIOUS FRIENDS
Director | Camera | Editor
This film follows the intimate and sometimes humorous collaboration between Bruce Adolphe (of NPR's "Piano Jazz,"), Trombonist Steve Wilson of The University of Texas at El Paso, and select ensemble musicians of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project as they meet for the first rehearsal in Ft. Collins, CO to premier a Bhutanese folktale. They each become, with their instruments, one of four animals, learning to live harmoniously. We follow the process of putting this theatrical musical piece together through rehearsals, interviews and three performances for Off the Hook Arts Summerfest 2017 festival. Other performances have premiered at Princeton University and Lincoln Center in NYC.
